The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities also known as NIEPMD was established in 2005 on the East Coast Road at Muttukadu, Chennai, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, to serve as a national resource centre dedicated to individuals with multiple disabilities. NIEPMD offers a range of long‑term academic programmes, including undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as B.Ed./M.Ed. in Multiple Disabilities, PG Diploma in Early Intervention, Diploma in Special Education (Multiple Disabilities), and other developmental therapy qualifications, as well as short‑term courses and orientation/sensitization training for medical professionals, teachers, health personnel, ICDS and panchayat workers, administrators and NGOs.

The institute’s well‑equipped infrastructure features a library, laboratories, hostels (both for men and women), canteen, cafeteria, computer labs, auditorium, healthcare/medical facilities, and specialized units including prosthetic–orthotic, early childhood special education, and therapy units. NIEPMD facilitates rehabilitation services through its Department of Medical Science by offering physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics/orthotics, sensory integration, psychological services, early intervention, family cottage services, and supports outreach and extension centres across multiple states to expand accessibility.

To support economically disadvantaged and disabled students, NIEPMD provides scholarships and financial aid, including freeships/scholarships for SC/ST students, “disability awards” for categories such as PH/MR/VI/HH/MD, and central‑sector scholarships for SC candidates; it also facilitates educational loans through Nationalized Banks and NHFDC.

NIEPMD Admission 2026
