Rayalaseema University, established in 2008 by Act No. 29 of 2008 formally launched on September 24, 2008 by the Andhra Pradesh government emerged from a postgraduate centre initiated by Sri Venkateswara University in 1977, aimed at serving rural youth in the Kurnool region. Since its inception, the university has steadily added programmes: initial offerings in Economics and Operations Research, followed by Physics and Chemistry in 1979; Computer Science, Management, and Mathematics around 2000; Botany and Zoology by 2006; and after full university status in 2008–09, introduced M.A. in English, M.Ed, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Com., and M.Sc. Electronics and Communications by 2012–13. Over the years, the university has earned recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), and its newly established College of Engineering from 2019–20 is approved by AICTE.
