Initially known as TTTI Calcutta, it was renamed NITTTR Kolkata in 2003 when it gained national status. In a major development, the institute was granted the status of Deemed-to-be University (Distinct Category) on March 11, 2024, empowering it to award its own degrees. Recognized by AICTE and affiliated with MAKAUT, NITTTR Kolkata offers a range of postgraduate and doctoral programs, including M.Tech in Manufacturing Technology, Multimedia & Software Systems, Mechatronics Engineering, and Structural Engineering, along with Ph.D. programs in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science Engineering.

Both M.Tech and Ph.D. programs of the National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTTR), Kolkata, are open for admission. Candidates must have a valid GATE (or similar) score and a relevant B.E./B.Tech degree with at least 55% of the possible points (with CGPA or category-specific relaxations) in order to be considered for an M.Tech. Final selection will be made through MAKAUT counselling, which includes document verification and payment of fees. If they have passed the UGC-NET, JRF, or SET, Ph.D. candidates can enter directly; if not, they can enter indirectly through an interview and institutional entrance exam; chosen candidates must also complete the MAKAUT counselling process to be admitted.
