The NCBS 2025 admissions will be done on the basis of national entrance tests such as JGEEBILS, CSIR/UGC-JRF, GATE, or equivalent. The candidates should be in the top 5 percentile in PhD and Integrated PhD courses. The candidate will be shortlisted after presentation of a detailed application together with referee reports, and an interview will be conducted. The students are then selected on their interview performance, record and aptitude in conducting research. M.Sc by Research and M.Sc Wildlife Biology also have written tests and interviews to gain admission.

NCBS offers fellowships and scholarships to assist in research students. PhD students are given a monthly fellowship of INR 37,000 (JRF) increased to INR 42000 (SRF) after registration along with an additional contingency grant. Integrated MSc-PhD students are paid INR 16,000 per month during the first year, viz. INR 25,000 28,000 when registered, and given annual contingency grants. The M.Sc by Research students get INR 16000-per-month and the MSc Wildlife Biology students receive INR 12000-per-month. These scholarships stabilize the academics of the students undertaking higher research.
