Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), located in Kottayam, Kerala, was established on 2 October 1983 Gandhi Jayanti as a state public university to serve central Kerala. Over the decades, MGU has earned high acclaim: it was the first university in Kerala to receive NAAC A++ in its fourth accreditation cycle (CGPA 3.61) in March 2025, and in the same cycle it was awarded UGC Category‑I status, granting it full autonomy for new programs and distance education. In national and international rankings, MGU placed 37th among Indian universities (2024 NIRF) and 67th overall, while also securing a spot in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 (401–500 band) and achieving 4th among Indian universities in THE Asia 2025.
It also topped the THE Young University Rankings 2024 in India. MGU offers a comprehensive spectrum of academic programmes more than 300 at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and doctoral levels across faculties such as liberal arts, pure and applied sciences, technology, management, law, education, hotel management, pharmacy, fine arts, and interdisciplinary fields like nanoscience, tourism, journalism, biotechnology, environmental sciences, rehabilitation sciences and disaster management . It has 31 teaching and research departments and approximately 260 affiliated colleges in central Kerala. Entrance and admission are conducted through various tests, including KEAM, KMAT, CMAT, CAT, MAT, GATE, CLAT/AILET, NEET‑UG, and the university’s own MGU‑CAT.
