Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi began its distinguished journey in 1919 as the Benares Engineering College under the visionary leadership of Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, evolving through IT‑BHU in the late 1960s and officially attaining IIT status in June 2012. IIT BHU has consistently demonstrated excellence in both national and international rankings however, the rankings of 2026 has not yet released. Meanwhile, in the NIRF 2024, it achieved a prestigious 10th place in Engineering and 30th overall in India. Globally, the institute was ranked 531st in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and notably improved from 571 in 2024, additionally securing the 336th position in the 2024 QS Sustainability (Good Governance) category, and ranking 13th among Indian universities.

IIT BHU Admission 2026

IIT BHU Admission is based on national-level exams. For undergraduate programs like B.Tech and B.Arch, candidates must clear JEE Advanced (plus AAT for B.Arch) and have at least 75% in 10+2 (65% for SC/ST/PwD). M.Tech and M.Pharm aspirants need a relevant bachelor's degree with a valid GATE or GPAT score. M.Sc admissions require JAM, and Ph.D. applicants must qualify through GATE/NET or hold a B.Tech from an IIT with CGPA ≥ 8.0. Admissions usually begin in March–April, with classes starting in July.

How to apply for IIT BHU?

For B.Tech/ B.Arch

• Register and appear for JEE Main (conducted by NTA).
• If qualified, register and appear for JEE Advanced (conducted by IITs).
• After JEE Advanced results, register at https://josaa.nic.in JoSAA portal for centralized counselling.
• Fill in choices, selecting IIT BHU and preferred branches.
• Seat allotment happens based on JEE rank and preferences.
• For B.Arch, additionally appear for AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) after JEE Advanced.

For M.Tech/ M.Pharm

• Appear for GATE (or GPAT for M.Pharm).
• Register on COAP portal (coap.iitd.ac.in) for seat offers.
• Simultaneously, apply on IIT BHU’s PG admission portal during the application window (usually March–April).
• Upload academic records, GATE/ GPAT score, category certificate, etc.
• Attend a written test/interview if called (some branches may require).
• Confirm admission via COAP offer acceptance.

For M.Sc

• Appear for JAM exam (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc).
• After results, register for JAM counselling at the official JAM website.
• Fill choices including IIT BHU and preferred programs.
• Seat allotment is based on JAM rank and availability.
• Pay admission fee and complete verification.

For Ph.D

• Visit iitbhu.ac.in and go to the Dean (Academic) → Admissions section.
• Fill Ph.D. application form online during the advertised admission cycle (March–April or November–December).
• Upload academic documents, research proposals (if required), and exam scores.
• Shortlisted candidates are invited for a written test and/or interview.
• Final selection is based on merit, performance, and availability of guides/funding.

IIT BHU provides a robust financial support system aimed at meritorious and economically disadvantaged students across all levels.
