Essential highlights of IIT BHU
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi began its distinguished journey in 1919 as the Benares Engineering College under the visionary leadership of Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, evolving through IT‑BHU in the late 1960s and officially attaining IIT status in June 2012. IIT BHU holds prestigious accreditations from UGC and AICTE, and ranks consistently high 10th among engineering institutes (NIRF–2024), 531 globally (QS–2024), and 8th by The Week magazine. The institute forms an autonomous arm of BHU, offering a broad spectrum of undergraduate (B.Tech, integrated B.Tech–M.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech, M.Pharm, MBA) and doctoral programs, all of which welcome admission through national-level exams such as JEE‑Advanced, GATE, and GPAT.
The institute has an impressive record of research output and alumni contributions, underpinned by multiple inter-disciplinary schools, modern facilities such as the National MEMS Design Center and advanced biomaterials labs, and a sprawling 1,300-acre campus housing over 16 departments. Also include extensive libraries (housing over 400,000 books, 8,000 e‑journals, digital repositories, and Wi‑Fi), modern auditoria, research labs, sports complexes, hostels (AC & non‑AC), cafeterias, clinics, shuttle services, and high-speed internet across about 1,000 smart classrooms .
Scholarships are widely available: a Merit‑cum‑Means award covers 25% of undergraduates, with further endowment grants and special provisions (mess reimbursements, pocket support) for SC/ST; all non‑sponsored M.Tech/M.Pharm students receive JRF-level stipends; doctoral candidates benefit from numerous Junior/Senior Research Fellowships; in addition, institutional scholarships like the N.C. Jain award, Top-Class SC/ST scholarships via NSP, and various national and international fellowships (Rhodes, MEXT, USIEF) enrich the financial support ecosystem.
