HIMT is a leading private maritime training institute that since its foundation in 1998 has changed the face of the maritime training business in India. It is based in Chennai Tamil Nadu and is known to provide state of the art facilities and education on par with the industry. HIMT has been approved by Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) and is affiliated with the Indian Maritime University (IMU), and is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and it is also recognized by maritime organizations worldwide such as the Nautical Institute. It has repeatedly taken a place at the top of the surveys conducted by The Week and India Today among maritime colleges in India, but is not included within NIRF or QS.
The institute has no affiliated colleges and can accept more than 1,500 students each year; specializing in marine engineering programs: undergraduate B.Tech in Marine Engineering and B.Sc in Nautical Science, as well as graduate (GME) programs; diplomas in Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) and Electro Technical Officer (ETO); and pre-sea training GP Rating. Interesting to note, are partnerships with leading shipping companies such as Maersk, MSC and Synergy Marine to enable placement, internship and sponsored training, to make graduates highly employable in the global maritime arena.

HIMT College is a maritime-oriented institution that specializes in integrating academic- and hands-on sea-based education, along with use of simulators and industry qualifications within the education framework. The main courses are B.Tech Marine engineering in specialisation of ship systems, B.Sc Nautical science in the area of navigation and DNS in faster track as a deck officer. The HIMT college has a common entrance examination that is IMU CET, which is followed by medical fitness assessments, and interviews to take admission in the year 2025. All candidates are required to fulfill the age and academic qualifications, but there are relaxations of the same to the reserved categories. GME and ETO are required to obtain sponsorships by shipping companies that cover training, and guarantee employment after training. There are some application fees, which cost INR 1,000 and should be paid online. The shortlisted candidates are put through the eyesight and physical tests as may be required by DG Shipping. There are a limited number of seats with preference to top IMU CET rankers. Foreign students must have similar credentials and entry visas. It accepts admissions in August to facilitate a disciplined culture of professionals in the world of supply lines.
