Essential highlights of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow, was established in 2020 by the Uttar Pradesh legislative act No. 42 of 2018 (enacted on December 22, 2018; effective from October 15, 2020) and functions as a state affiliating university overseeing all government and private medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 and empowered to award degrees, it also holds approval from the National Medical Commission (formerly MCI).
Since commencing academic operations on a transit campus in 2021–22, ABVMU has rapidly expanded its curriculum to include undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS/MDS), nursing (B.Sc., Post-Basic B.Sc., M.Sc.), pharmacy, optometry, physiotherapy, medical lab technology, and specialized paramedical fields. The university offers access to facilities such as extensively stocked libraries, modern departmental laboratories, separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with Wi‑Fi and mess, gymnasiums, health centres, and sports, NCC/NSS, and placement cell support via its affiliates.
While still developing its permanent campus, plans for a state‑of‑the‑art auditorium, administrative blocks, and a teaching hospital are underway. ABVMU has also established scholarships through the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department for SC/ST/OBC and other eligible students. Within just a few years, the university has made significant strides in research, streamlined centralized admissions via NEET and its own entrance tests (CNET/CPET), and forged strong academic governance, positioning itself as a rising hub for comprehensive healthcare education in the region.
