AMET was founded in 1993 as the first maritime university in India with a focus on maritime related training, education and research. AMET is a NAAC-accredited (with an A grade), UGC-recognized, NBA-approved, AICTE-approved and PCI-approved private university located at Kanathur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university ranks at number 48 on PG 2-year engineering programs and number 90 on PG 2 year management programs in the country and it falls under the 510-588 bracket on UG innovation and engineering courses.
AMET provides marine related undergraduate programs, post-graduate programs, diploma programs, certificate programs and doctorate level programs in the field of marine engineering, nautical science, naval architecture, petroleum engineering and marine engineering, transport and logistics. AMET has more than 3,000 students and close ties with the industry, working together with Maersk, Shipping Corporation of India, international maritime organizations, and other partners in ensuring international exposure, industry-oriented curriculum design and placement of the graduates.

AMET has a wide range of diploma, certificate, UG and PG courses in marine engineering, nautical science and naval architecture, management and logistics. B.E. admissions 10+2 PCM including qualifying in the AMET Entrance Exam, interview and medical test is required. For MBA Admissions, they are willing to accept a CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA, JMET or TANCET score. Admission to certificate and diplomas is on an entrance basis.

The 2025 admissions at AMET are open to a variety of marine, engineering, management and science programs. Applicants to the UG are to pass the AMET Entrance Exam, interview (personal) and medical fitness examination. Admission MBA at the country level accepts the filter test scores, and it may consist of a direct interview. This will be an entirely online based application process where the candidates will fill out the form, upload the documents, and pay the application charge via the university portal. Shortlisted candidates are counseled and allotted seats with frequent updates and notification being posted on their official web site. The university also gives its directions on scholarships and education loans to aid deserving students.
The placement cell in AMET offers close contacts with prominent shipping companies, logistic companies and maritime agencies. The highest package on offer in 2025 was INR 12,00,000 per annum and the average package was INR 6,00,000 per annum. Maersk, Shipping Corporation of India, Great Eastern shipping, Anglo-Eastern and Fleet Management were top recruiters. The university sponsors campus interviews, pre-placement talks and also internship opportunities so that the university has high placement rates among graduates.

Various scholarships and fee subsidies are provided by AMET in order to help meritorious students with economically weak backgrounds. Ex-Servicemen and Fishermen Scholarships: a 15% waiver of the tuition fee to the eligible candidates whose family income is below INR 2,00,000 per annum. There is also the concession of fees on academic merit and financial ability. The offering of the scholarships is made during the period of admission, and depends on documentation and university consent.
